#14: Escape From Alcatraz
Set Piece: The Escape
Location: Alcatraz Island, San Francisco
Production Budget: $8 million*
There is no denying that Escape from Alcatraz kept us on the edge of our seats with Clint Eastwood leading the way. In this 1979 thriller, Eastwood’s character tries a daring escape from the infamous California prison. Alcatraz isn’t a prison anymore; it closed down in 1936, mostly due to costs.

The movie was shot at an abandoned prison, and it took a fortune to prepare everything for filming. Back when it was open, Alcatraz housed some of the toughest criminals around, like Al Capone, Doc Barker, and George “Machine-Gun” Kelly.
