The Wrong Crowd
When Janis returned to San Francisco, her heroin use escalated alarmingly. In the summer of 1970, she crossed paths with the intriguing Seth Morgan. A 21-year-old UC Berkeley student, affluent East Coast native, cocaine dealer, and future novelist. He convinced Janis of his genuine interest in her, not her wealth, even signing a contract to prove it. Seth was reminiscent of the popular boys Janis always yearned for approval from. Interestingly, he shared a name with Janis’ father and bore a striking resemblance to Tony Danza.

In the aftermath of her catastrophic high school reunion, a crushing sense of inferiority consumed her. This was her last-ditch effort to seize the ordinary life and sense of belonging she yearned for. Janis and Morgan, a pair of star-crossed lovers, were set to exchange their vows in the mellow warmth of early September, a testament to their undying affection and a beacon of hope in her quest for normalcy.
