#43: From the Ashes
Following 9/11, the area around those buildings was left pretty devastated for a long time. The devastation around those sites was a good reflection of how citizens of New York City, of the United States, and even the world at large felt after those terrible and tragic events.

But not everything was lost from that site! I love this image of a tree, battered but alive, surviving in the midst of so much destruction and devastation. For the people who worked on the site, seeing that tree, which had survived so much and continued to grow and thrive, must have been a really inspiring symbol, it must have reminded the people of New York that though they had been badly bruised, they, too, would rise from the ashes, stretch out their branches and thrive.
