#14: Dorothy Arnold
Year of disappearance: 1910
Year of discovery: never found
In 1910, the disappearance of Dorothy Arnold, a wealthy 25-year-old New York socialite and aspiring writer, captivated Manhattan. She vanished after telling her mother she would buy a gown and, later, telling a friend she’d walk in Central Park.
Arnold missed lunch with her mother, prompting her family to hire detectives rather than involve the police, fearing scandal. When police were finally informed, leads had evaporated. Speculation ranged from suicide, a botched abortion, to foul play by her boyfriend, but her case remains unresolved.
