#31: Lincoln’s Close Encounter with Mortality
In an era where his stature was already notable, Abraham Lincoln, possibly the tallest U.S. President, favored a top hat, making him more conspicuous. Unbeknownst to him, this choice nearly led to his demise in 1864.

During a basic inspection of the Union Army’s front lines and camps, a Confederate infantry brigade’s surprise attack and ensuing gunfire nearly cost Lincoln his life. Owing to a General’s timely advice, he narrowly escaped being hit by Confederate bullets.
