#41: The Outfit of Union Infantry Soldiers
During the Civil War, Union soldiers’ infantry commonly wore a uniform consisting of a dark blue cap, tunic, grey trousers, and sturdy leather boots. While there were variations among units, cavalry units, often comprised of wealthier enlistees, boasted more elaborate uniforms.

The diverse colors of militia units sometimes led to confusion. Each soldier was issued a rifle and a bayonet, which could be affixed to the firearm or utilized separately as a formidable melee weapon, ensuring that every soldier was equipped for both ranged and close-quarters combat on the battlefield.
