Smokestacks are ominous on their own, but add in a stormy sky and a scary brick building, and the results are horror film material. This is actually a hotel nestled near the smokestacks in Kapotnya, Russia. The city itself has been fined many times over for the amount of pollution they’re pumping into the environment.

If you truly need a place to stay in this town, look for literally any other accommodations available. There’s a gorgeous cathedral over 2km away that encompasses the best of Russian architecture! Recent work has begun to create a biosphere to contain the pollution, making this city healthier overall. A lot of work still needs to be done, though.
