#5: A Bottomless Pit
This terrifying pit is an apartment complex in Johannesburg, South Africa, called Ponte City Apartments. It’s the tallest residential building in Africa at 55 stories and was built in 1975. The hollow cylindrical shape allows light into both sides of the apartments, and the design, by Manfred Hermer, has won numerous awards.
It began deteriorating shortly after it was built, as gangs ravaged the exterior, and has changed ownership several times in an effort to revitalize it. Today, it’s uninhabited but is used as a movie set (horror movies and thrillers, we can only assume). It’s been featured in seven movies, including four documentaries and SEAL Team 8: Behind Enemy Lines. In 2020, Beyoncé’s film Black is King used the interior.
