#35: It Goes Both Ways
This next one is just sad. We are finally making progress towards more support for and more willingness to believe women who are victims of domestic abuse; we have gotten slightly better at holding their abusers accountable. But what about men?
It is entirely possible and all too common for men to be the victims of abuse, but as a society, we are still really terrible at taking it seriously. Men who report abuse, especially physical abuse, are often disbelieved or mocked, because we have this idea in our heads of what an abusive relationship looks like, and a woman beating a man just isn’t it. If a man in your life says he’s been abused, please take him seriously.
