The Treasures of Tillya Tepe and Their Journey
In 1978, Tillya Tepe, also known as the Bactrian gold, was unearthed in Afghanistan, revealing over 20,600 artifacts from the 1st century BCE, including gold, silver, and ivory pieces, showcasing the rich history buried beneath Golden Hill.
Lost during wartime, the Bactrian treasure resurfaced in 2003 in Kabul’s secret vaults. A collaboration between France and Afghanistan allowed its exhibition in the US and Paris, with plans to house the collection permanently in a Kabul museum.
