Discovering the Watlington Hoard: Viking Treasures Unearthed
In Oxfordshire, the Watlington Hoard, a significant Viking-era find, was unearthed in 2015, featuring 186 coins, 15 silver ingots, and seven jewelry pieces, leading to a purchase by the British Museum for over $1.5 million in 2017.
The treasure includes arm-rings and bracelets, accentuated with a gold scrap, marking a post-defeat burial by Guthrum’s Great Heathen Army in 878, following a loss to Alfred the Great.
