The Golden Voyage of the S.S. Central America
Dubbed the ‘Ship of Gold’, the S.S. Central America boasted an impressive stash of gold, valued at about $150 million. This 280-foot steamer frequently journeyed between the U.S. East Coast and Central America in the mid-19th century.
In 1988, a team of Ohio treasure hunters dispatched an ROV to the depths to uncover the secrets of the Central America. Their efforts unearthed 7,000 gold coins, part of the massive treasure once aboard the legendary ship.
