#26: Church Bell
Church bells are ringing! In the past, the term ‘church bell’ was used to describe a chatterbox or gossip. Originating in informal English during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the term conveyed the idea of someone who was constantly ringing or spreading news, much like the bells of a church calling attention.
The term evoked imagery of incessant talk or gossip, often associated with individuals who were overly talkative or prone to sharing rumors and hearsay. It actually makes a lot of sense, when you think about it. We’re surprised and a little sad that this term lost its popularity!
